Top Ten Webcomics
July 13th 2007 12:26
Well, Cibby put me up to doing a top ten of Penny Arcade. I decided, in a testosterone fuelled moment of pure nerdish arrogance to go one further. I am doing a top ten of Web comics. Single panel, though sometimes reading the next one or two along would be recommnded. I should warn everyone, that some of these have swearing and many of them completely unnacceptable dialogue. They do have the saving grace of being very funny though. Many of them are game related, and where I feel a context is necessary, I have added it.
Honourable Mentions:
I am in retail, and was unfortunately, involved in many cases of angry person with a non-functioning iPOD. I hate the iPOD. I really, really do. Mainly because when you have an angry person yelling at you and telling you that you are a terrible human being for not being able to service their Fisher Price, I mean, Apple product dislike tends to mutate into hatred for that company. I laughed very hard at this one. Has swearing.
Steve Jobs = EVIL
One of my favourite movies is V for Vendetta. The dialogue, performances, thematic study, etc etc etc. This jewel from VG Cats is funnier if you've seen the movie and is one of the more intelligent pieces of art available.
He is HERE!
If I should ever happen to meet either Kevin J Anderson, or Brian Herbert, I am sure that there are juries out there that would not convict me should I choose the vigilante's path against them. That being said, this three panel commentary sums up just about everything there is to say about their quite successful attempt to prove they have no talent. Note, this one has swearing.
Why people that CAN'T write Shouldn't
This is one of my youngest brother Ethan's favourite series. Mostly because it involves swearing, terrible puns, and general mockery of pop culture. I liked this one tremendously, as it is one of their clean, kind of tasteful but hilarious gags. I do warn you though, plenty of their work is not clean and exceptionally NOT tasteful. The comic I picked doesn't have a title, so I made one up.
Oh Yeah?
I had this one on another post recently, but due to the terrible nature of it's punnage, I believe that it deserves a place. User Friendly is also child friendly. Their jokes are amusing, the dialogue pleasant.
This Is Conveniently Untrue
Sluggy Freelance was one of the first webcomics that I began to get into at the behest of a friend of mine named Jordan, who is also known as hewhocutsdown. This is one of his earliest, when I believe he was at his funniest as well. This webcomic did go from pure comedy, to a mix of drama and comedy and the art improved out of sight. Generally speaking, Sluggy is good for most ages, has no swearing that I can remember etc etc etc.
Damn, Out Of Rockets
With the current military trends of a certain world SuperPower, this is not so surprising. Also, it might help Cibby connect a few dots here and there. Has a naughty word.
Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Canukistan, all very dangerous
Heh, I played this game, got very addicted to it and finally had to throw it off my computer and return all the discs to the friend of mine that lent it to me. Ever since then, I've quite enjoyed games that let me play God. Me and Ethan still quote a line from this comic sometimes when describing what kind of violent action may be precipitated against someone else when the dishes need doing and someone is not doing them.
Yes, Fire Bad
Concerned is a machinima comic made on the model of Halflife 2. HL2 Is touted as being one of the best first person shooting games on the basis that it was fun, immersive, had a great plot, good scripting and most importantly, had a physics engine that is still considered a good 12 out of 5. To be honest, you should read the entire series of this comic and then give this guy some money or something. The work is brilliant and hilarious.
PAF!
Yeah, the title sucks. LFG is a wonderful blend of many things. Internet humour, nerdish pursuits and great art. If the internet were a never ending buffets of every different kind of food type, LFG would be a steak of some kind. A nice one. This series is young and updates only twice a week, but you should have a look at their work and buy a t-shirt. Me, I'm thinking of getting me the t-shirt of Richard claiming that the orphanage (now a blazing inferno) attacked him. Good stuff and no swearing.
Richard is Funny
Ctrl-Alt-Del is why alot of other webcomics have started and kept going. Tim Buckley is a genius, all around nice guy and is NOT paying me to write this. (that being said, I am NOT getting paid by anyone to write these nice things about these guys). I am using this comic, partly because it is Ethan's favourite, and because I cannot put the whole comic up here on one link. In all seriousness, gamers will love this one. Non-gamers might not get all the jokes, but hey, it is still very very very funny. Note, this webcomic does have quite a bit of swearing in it.
Yes.....Slipped
In all honesty, Penny Arcade, Ctrl-Alt-Del and VG Cats probably could have their own top ten each. I use this one, because me and Ethan have said it to each other for a variety of different reasons a variety of different times, about a variety of different games. When nothing is going well, surely it is raining in Shanghai. Still has swearing
I Hope You Saved
Pulp Fiction is also a favourite movie. For many of the same reasons V for Vendetta is. This comic had me in stitches for more than five consectutive minutes. If you haven't seen Pulp Fiction, first go rent it out and watch it. Then come back and read it. Fanboys impresses me because he is usually amusing, at times slamming straight into hilarious and keeps his PG rating. Impressive indeed in this day and age. Enjoy.
What Ain't No Country I Ever Heard Of! They Speak English In What?
So, there you go. Cibby, I hope you enjoy the mental pain and anguish I went through to get this done for you. I also hope that everyone else enjoyed it, or at least, enjoyed the webcomics.

Also the subplot where everyone thought Ethan ate the penguin then it turned out he had actually eaten his own poop.

I have read a bit of that one. Admittedly, it kind of completely scooted under my radar. Might have to start reading it again.
Hoped you like the list.

Yeah, Ethan LOVES Ctrl-Alt-Del. He looks like the guy, plays like the guy and tends to carry on like him. Buying him a t-shirt from there has made me his favourite older brother (out of four).
Glad you could come by and give me some more reading material.

And no, Overlord status takes a lot of work, and cannot be bought over by fancy trinkets.

Thanks. But don't thank me, thank the men and other men that put hundreds of hours of work into their comics.
God bless 'em.
