Thanks to Cheap, Crappy Books
June 3rd 2007 12:41
Chesterton called them Penny Dreadfuls. I am calling them the Fifteen Dollar Crappies. They entertain us on trains, busses, beaches or any other place we need a quick but entertaining read. They keep us from being bored on long trips, they fill up the empty spaces in our bookshelves and they give us a guilty pleasure when we need one.
But is that all that they do? Well no. To be honest some of my favourite reads are the ones that weren't amazing novels. The Gaunt's Ghosts series by Dan Abnett is actually quite entertaining (oh crap, I just showed that I am MORE of a nerd than you guys already knew) and so is the Star Wars fan fiction (I just keep digging that hole, don't I?).
If all books were meals, then they would be the potato chips that you sit down and eat while you watch tv. They may not be good for you, but you enjoy them nevertheless. To all you authors out there, thanks.

Personally, I like going to a bookshop and sifting through the 50 cent piles. For 50 cents, I'd try nearly anything.
I have my weaknesses, though. Even though they were terrible books, I read all of Brian Herbert's books.. he's Frank Herbert's son, and he wrote bland prequels to the Dune series.
Also, I picked up a Star Wars book to try and get into it - but it was terrible, too. Any good recommendations? I've only read one that was good and it was... amazing!

Don't know what that is? Well, if you see a store called 'Games Workshop', Warhammer 40k is the sci-fi game, with all the Space Marines, and Eldar and Tyranids etc.

How was it?
And what was it about?

There are many things that can be said about the prequels of Dune. I think it was best said by the guys at Penny Arcade
Really Long Link
I too am a Dune lover. I too, am a hater of the prequels.
As far as Star Wars Fanfiction goes, get the stuff by Timothy Zahn. He would be the best of them. Also Michael Stackpole's work with the Rogue Squadron series as well as I, Jedi was a very good read.
Hope you like them,

remember this......
I know where you sleep. I know your friends. I know your parents (which is a dead giveaway on the basis that they are my parents as well).
Just remember, I can end you with a single fist.
heh,
Anonymous is in this case my youngest brother, Ethan, who co-wrote the second entry about why the Left Behind game should have been Left Behind.

hey, although I like the Star Wars fanbooks, most of them are crap...so I decided to write three of my own!
I also wrote two Star Trek Next Gen books...haven't submitted those either...
LOL
Actually, I haven't had the guts to submit any of them but hey, friends and family tell me they're great so....maybe someday I'll work up the nerve to submit one...
If you're loking for a fantastic sci-fi book to read try Earth Abides by George R. Stewart....it's an old one but it can be applied to today...
It's a great read...But frankly I have to have a book that truly holds my interest before I'll pay full price for it...In that regard I'm a lot like Cibby, old bookstores are an adventure to me...
Great post!
Take care,
Nick

Dude, seriously, submit them. What do you have to lose? What do you have to gain?
I'll keep an eye out for that book.
Also the Dark Elf Trilogy by RA Salvatore is the best thing I have ever read of his.

The best Star Wars book I ever read was the one called 'Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina' which provides backstories for all the characters you see in the background....
It fleshes out the Cantina scenes to an impressive degree. I've got a copy if you haven't read it.

I don't think I have it and right now my "YOU WILL READ THIS"list is pretty big.
But hey, happy to give it a quick flick through.
