Star Wars
January 3rd 2007 02:41
I got episodes 3, 4 and 5 for Christmas this year, and after a good healthy indulgence to my nerdier impulses, felt I should write something down about it.
I am a lover of Star Wars. Despite it's futuristic setting, so much of the dialogue, particularly that of the Jedi, is so very archaic. I don't just mean Yoda, I mean Obi Wan, Luke (when he really starts wearing his ovaries on the outside) and Mace Windu. They all had great dialogue, lightsabres and force powers. I would like to have those three things as well, they appeal to me.
One thing that stands out for me though, that as a series, Star Wars has a very simple plot, very simple setting, very simple characters. Yes, they change, they develop, but they are simple. Perhaps this is the largest part of the appeal. Luke changes from a whiny farmboy (the line about picking up power converters is a case in point) to a full sabre swinging jedi knight complete with semi-archaic dialogue. Vader goes from hero, to villain (one of the most successful and well known villains in the world) to hero again. Han goes from mercenary and jerk to someone you'd trust to look after the kids and NOT sell them into slavery (unless you asked, then I am sure he could get you a really good price). The supreme values of good and evil, right and wrong, creativity verses conformity, nazi racism verses tolerance all shine through and do so brilliantly.
I would have to say though, that my favourite moment in all of Star Wars is in episode three, where they put the mask and helmet on Anakin, turning him into the full Vader. The click, the electronic whine, the sound of the first breath.........Goosebumps. My favourite episode? Easily episode 5. Grainy, confronting for the characters, LUke meets Yoda (best line in the movie "always looking to the future, the next horizon. Never his mind on where he was. What he was doing." poking Luke with his walking stick repeatedly). Luke finds out Vader is his father. Some of the best lines Vader ever had. Don't make me destroy you. You underestimate the power of the dark side. You have failed me for the last time.
So, what does everyone else think?

I'm supposed to be doing prep for new articles but I get your new post notification and faster than the speed of lightsaber...I'm here.
Luke. I love Luke. I also read the EU books and he's 'matured' in to a True Jedi Master.
I have all 6. Didn't really want 'revenge of The Sith' because no matter how fantastic Hayden is as Anakin, he is not Darth vader. Well not to me, old school, you know...
James Earl Jones, David Prowse and Sebastian Shaw made Darth Vader so perfect (in his imperfection) that no one, nothing would have done this justice.
My favourite bits? Aaargh...too hard to choose...of course, if you remember to way back when we first met on one of your first Star Wars posts, you might remember why I liked 'Attack of The Clones'. But it's not really my favourite bit. Nor movie.
Anything Han Solo says is Solod (groan) Gold.
eg
Leia: Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder.
Han Solo: Who's scruffy-looking?
Best Yoda-ism; "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try."
(Love that!)
Many many bits and quotes...will have to come back.
See you soon JZ.

I watched the new ones and, though they were actually terrible movies, I enjoyed them as an addition to the Star Wars universe.
It's a great universe for a sci-fi setting, which is why the old comic books rocked...
these days, I get my star wars kicks from some of the better videogames. Played Knights of the Old Republic? It's basically like several full length movies!

Yeah, I knew this was an easy way to get some attention.....
My least favourite of these movies is episode 1. I hate episode 1. I hate Jarjar Binks. If Lucas wanted to make a quick couple of million, make a movie where we get to see Jarjar torn apart by angry wampa or eaten by a rancor.
I liked Han Solo's line in episode five
"Okay, okay, don't get excited."
"It would take alot more than being held by you to get me excited."
"Well I'm sorry princess, didn't have time for anything else."
Come back soon Dusk, we need more nerd here.

I haven't played through KOTOR, but I have played through Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy, Empire at War and Battlefront.
Thinking about getting my hands on the expansion for it as well.
Also thinking about getting a Wii when they bring out a jedi game.
How pathetic am I?

Just a quick comment...a riposte!
(Still pun-ching...)
JarJar Jinx!
Again from Ep 5, Han's response to something Chewbacca um...wookied..."laugh it up fuzzball"...I've adopted this!!
And just Harrison Ford's expression and delivery and timing...brilliant.
Like when Lando Calrissian asks him (again in Ep 5);
Lando: "Having trouble with your droid?"
Han: "No. No problem. Why?"
C3PO was literally in pieces!!!
A Jedi Knight game on Wii??
Oh wayyyyyyyyy too cool.
Hope you are well JZ my friend.
2007 flowing well so far?

Yeah, episode 5, loaded with such great and golden memories.
Yeah, the second the released the Wii, I had a vision of a Star Wars game. A game where you could block blaster bolts, kill stormies and sith lords......... A game where hopefully, you get to kill off the entire gungan race...... (in starwars Empire at War you actually get a chance to kill them, also in Star Wars Battle front II)
I am doing exceptionally well this year Dusk.
I don't have plans for this year, I simply have what I am going to do.
How are you?
