MASH vs Scrubs vs Greys Anatomy

April 29th 2007 12:42
I admit, I added Greys Anatomy to get attention. Honestly, there is little in this universe that would make me watch it. A gun held to my head might work, but I can't promise anything. My younger brother Dominic is telling me that MASH and Scrubs are part of the long tradition of American television where it is all either medical drama/comedy or crime fighting. Admittedly, I am now looking forward to the crimefighting wisecracking doctors.

The comedic styles are completely different. MASH was bred on wit and banter and the ability of people to make light of a heavy situation. Scrubs makes us laugh not just because it is strange, but because we recognise their strangeness is also our strangeness.

What is worth reflecting on though is that while neither MASH or Scrubs are labelled as dramas they can manage a greater level of emotional intensity in half the amount of time. Watching Dr Cox lose three patients in season 5 or Hawkeye's speech in season one, to say that we can do more damage to a human body than we can do good. House can be dramatic but the laughs can be huge.

They show us that people are still people, that life is always life.

Hiya JZ...

I must admit...I wondered why 'Greys Anatomy' was included in the title against M*A*S*H and Scrubs....

while neither MASH or Scrubs are labelled as dramas they can manage a greater level of emotional intensity in half the amount of time

I completely agree.

'Greys Anatomy' is a soapie.

'M*A*S*H and 'Scrubs' are reflections of (as you say) life.

...and what is it they say about laughter being the best medicine?....

How are you my friend?

I hope all is well. Did I read somewhere that you are without your Nata?...if so...oh buddy...big hug....

much warmth Josh

Hey Dusk,

yeah, soap operas are anathema to me. Dialogue, acting, plot, none of them good.

Even Pure Pwnage has better acting than most soaps, though the plot is about as thin.

Dusk, I'm doing well.

And yes, you read right, my Nata is home again and home is a long way from where I live. To be honest, we're both doing well. We're not breaking down and crying (I did that at the airport) and we're not depressed. The best thing that we can do for each other is do the best that we can with what we are doing right now.

Dusk, it is always a pleasure and honour to have you come calling. How is DDH and the kids?

Hi Josh,

I love both MASH and Scrubs (and I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see my 18 yr old cousin is a MASH fanatic.....good writing and acting will always stand the test of time!).

Scrubs makes us laugh not just because it is strange, but because we recognise their strangeness is also our strangeness.

So true. We are all a bit nutty aren't we?

Both of these shows do/did drama very well. In fact I think they do dramatic aspects of the show better than some drama shows......it's a bit more understated....and more powerful for it I think sometimes.

Hey JZ

UG I cannot stand Scrubs... maybe coz I don`t watch enough Tele to 'get it' .... but nah I don`t get it. I used to watch M*A*S*H as a wee one so have find memories of it and I only like Greys Anatomy coz of the song... I used to watch HOUSE but now I don`t get the chance because the TV gets hijacked (is it LOST that`s on??? dunno)

M*A*S*H brings back fond memories... did you used to watch MORK AND MINDAY? hehehehehehe I loved that programme!

Love hem both but my favouite is mash by a long shot,
tho I think your comment on both is pefectly worded tho I probably would have made a reference to Henry Blake dying in what was up untill that point one of he happiest episodes, so trully gave a suprise at the end of the episode but the scrubs reference is good. Those programs make me want to dosome good in the world(and I'm probably not alone in that thought) they even made me think about trying to become a doctor.....well at least for a little while but somehow I think an alcoholic who has a phobia of vomit & an obsesion with structrual engineering would'nt be a fitting canndidate.

Hey Kylie,

I'll admit that I find Scrubs funnier, but I like alot of the dialogue that Hawkeye gets. He also had perfect comedic timing, which is rare.

The whole dramatic thing is brilliantly done. I think that they can draw us in so well because they've made us laugh. I've read somewhere that laughter is the shortest distance between two people. Maybe true.

Thanks for coming by,

JZ

Hey Ash,

Well, each to their own. We are all different.

Is Greys still playing that song by the Fray? Brilliant song. Used really well by Scrubs in the episode that I commented on (for everyone that wants to know it is called My Lunch, part 2).

No, I didn't want Mork and Mindy. I was too into cartoons.

Hey Bul,

Dude, never doubt the good that anyone can do. Mother Theresa had no education but she knew how to care.

Thanks for coming mate,

JZ
