In Rememberance of Star Wars Day, My Favourite Star Wars Movie

May 4th 2007 12:49
Well, Star Wars day is nearly over. Things were said in Yoda's voice and syntax pattern. People were told that these were not the droids they were looking for. Choking gestures were made in the air in a cheap attempt at humour. People were told not to make other people destroy them. The power of the Dork, I mean Dark side was underestimated.

But the main point of this post isn't how much of a nerd I am or was today. It is about which of the five (I refuse to even consider the travesty that is part one) movies of Star Wars is my favourite. For me, it is episode 5. The Empire Strikes Back.

The atmosphere is perfect. The Rebellion is shown to be what they are. Desperate, idealistic, innovative. That they are more committed to their cause and to each other than they are afraid of the Empire. They are prepared to hide at the edges of the galaxy in order to strike at the heart of their enemy.

The romantic involvement of Han Solo and Princess Leia is wonderfully done. He flirts brilliantly. "Don't get excited." "Captain being held by you is hardly enough to excite me." "Sorry sweetheart, didn't have time for anything else." But their flirting becomes something alot more serious. And it does so in a wonderful way.

Luke's transformation from whiny farmboy (the line about power converters was whiny) to wearing his ovaries on the outside, wielding a lightsabre and the Force in equal measure. He grows up by decades in mere hours. Yoda's paws on teaching style can do that to a man. Luke's understanding of himself, his friends and his destiny widens by parsecs and the new character moves from the farmboy to the warrior, the mystic.

Vader is at his most Vaderish. Almost every line he has is amazing. Don't make me destroy you. Search your feelings. Apology accepted. You underestimate the power of the Dark Side. Every line he has is an instant classic.

Plotwise it is perfect. The Rebellion are shown as more vulnerable than strong. The Empire is shown as powerful, almost omnipresent and omnipotent. The characters likewise open themselves to the viewer, moving from one dimension to three. It leads directly into the next episode, setting the stage for an epicly amazing battle.

Hey JZ...

see I have a bittersweet romance with Star Wars... I had the worst hangover.... EVER... due to a horrible fight with a long term boyfriend... his way of making up was to wake me up with a greasy pie (~BARF~) and the first three episodes of Star Wars... he literally propped me up on the couch next to him and every time I started to nod off he would prod me awake.... did not enjoy it AT ALL... then the next three came out, and even though I had NO IDEA... I loved them... all of it!

So before I can comment honestly I think I need to dedicate a full week to Star Wars... and take it all in, in a good frame of mind... and then I can say (In Dusk`s fine words) MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!!!!!!

Hi Literati,
Empire Stikes back is the best of the series...my favourite is though is episode IV A New hope because its the one that changed my life at 5 years old. One of the strongest childhood memories I have.

I really was taken out of this world and out of my body by this as a kid. i cried at the end for hours because I didn't want it to end..

Hey Ash,

yeah, it sounds like you and Star Wars got off to a bad start. Honestly though, you can skip episode 1. Please, please skip it.

Start at 2 and work your way forwards from there.

Glad to see you here.

Hey JD (awesome, now I feel like I'm on Scrubs),

I can remember my older brother telling me that I had to watch Star Wars because it was the coolest movie around. I can also remember mum and dad letting me stayup late in order to watch it.

The love affair began then......

Of course, I love Empire. Who doesn't?

Empire was the one that changed my life as a kid... I don't remember much of A New Hope when it came out except for the garbage compactor scene.

But Empire - wow. Ice planet battles. Dagobah. The Cloud City. 'They arrived just before you did'.

Cibby,

Don't make me destroy you......

Side note, so many of the lines of that movie can be made almost infinitely funny if you change certain words, into the word pants.

There is a deep disturbance in the pants.

I know, I have felt it.

see? comic gold!

'Search your Pants. You know them to be true.'

'These pants smell a lot worse on the inside.'

You're right - that IS hilarious!
