Give Peace a Chance

Over the past couple of days I've noticed a tendency on Orble.
Alot of people are being really, really nasty to each other.
There have comments in which people have levelled guns at other people and blown at them with the full force of their words. And words do have power. People forget that sometimes, but they really do.
It might be that some people are frustrated over not being paid, or with the quality of other people's writing, or the fact that they pour their heart and soul into a post only to be trumped by a film clip from you-tube (that being said Cibby, it WAS very funny). It could even be that people are drunk, stoned, tired after a long day and decide to vent about it. It might even be that people are being funny but the joke isn't coming across as they would like.
Whatever.
Personally I think you should just move on from it. If you find a post that bad, or someone's comment puerile and offensive just delete it or move on. It takes alot more work to reply to it than it does to simply ignore it.
I also think that there are some amazing people on here, people I have respect for and would like to hang out with in real life. Dusk Devi, Ash, Homer Joyce, Lilly, Luke, Lilla, Joe Blogg and alot of other people as well. I may not always understand, or respect, or be able to empathise with what you write, but you are a great bunch of people.
That is pretty well my piece.
Can't we all just get along?

So, basically the problem is that some people think that some posts are getting undeserved success.
Personally I don't think there's a real alternative to popularity in terms of determining what should be on the popular list. (And, frankly, we all know what posts are going to make it there
But there are various ways to give kudos to posts that deserve it and aren't getting any. Cibby's "Post of the day" blog is an obvious method. There may be others.
But just taking Cib's idea and running with it... Why don't more people do "post of the day" blogs? Perhaps an open blog of this kind? If you don't like the popular posts list, why not start your own?
There's room for a couple such blogs in the Orble community. And each of them will inevitably have idiosyncratic selection criteria -- there are many ways to deserve kudos (good writing, entertaining, took a lot of hard work, important discussion, etc).

Another way to organize such a blog would be to go through each category in a rotation, and pick the best of the twenty or so most recent posts in each.

Duly noted. I'm not sure if I can promise to never post something nasty ever again ... I'm appalled by my own nastiness sometimes ... I'll certainly try not to be nasty on Orble ... even if only for this reason ... I do find Orble a place where a person can get to know themselves better by reading what other people post or comment to them or about them ...
Deep down ... (na, I'm not going there ... I've been there too often ... I don't see anything good down there ...
You were close to the mark when you said people like myself post such nastiness out of frustration ... but I really don't think it's just the frustration of not getting paid ... I think it's sexual frustration ... Or is it the frustration of not being paid so I can pay for sex?
I think you were right on the money ... as Bill Lawry always says ...
It's sexual and financial frustration ...
Your perception and niceness shits me ...
I'd much rather just write a response like 'Get fucked' ... (like I normally do) but how can I when you're who you are? I can't ...
Just for the record. I don't know you. I only know you from your comments and posts. But if I had half of your consistency and calmness ... I would believe I had some hope of redemption from my own nastiness ...

Well, I think it would be difficult to find a group of people with enough spare time to do it. But hey, more power to anyone that does.
I think that a few appreciation pages wouldn't go astray though. Alot of the time it is hard enough to generate hits, comments, votes or any other sign of recognition. Would also help people feel more appreciative to the whole system, which would build the community and that'd help Orble heaps.
Going to check out what you put on the forum.

I think you're a good man, believe it or not, contradict me or not.
I think the fact that you feel guilt about being nasty actually hints at a better nature. Just feed it Homer.

You are a lovely human being.
Words will only hurt if you give them power.
Tis better to just shrug, quip and laugh...and not take a personal attack so seriously.
The party with the least interest is the party with the most power.
Tis true what you say about Homer.

No really, excuse me. Cos it was fnny 'dog can't lick his testicles' thing, damn, where'd that come from?
Anyway, I don't get mad cos my posts don't end up on the popular posts page. I'm not so into attracting orble traffic os much so I want to extract external traffic, orble is only so big, but the internet, it's huge. Thats where the traffic exists, thats how orble makes money, honestly I get more of a buzz when an anonymous perosn posts on my blog than I would if one of my posts hits number 1 on popularity (which it has once I think) since it shows to me I have readers beyond orble who are passionate enough to post on my blog. Damn that is satisfying.
Some of my posts have generated a fair bit of misunderstandings (see fuckwad theory), I guess people sometimes read too deeply into things...

For those of us that have had these blogs from the beginning, I don't really notice a huge increase in traffic when I get a post on the popular page. It'll get more comments, which is nice, but it doesn't affect my number of readers OR my commissions.
Actually, when we first implemented the popular posts, the idea was to show non-Orblers some of the most active posts on the network - sort of 'here's what's happening on Orble', so that random visitors would see something interesting.
My post of the day page: I try to use this to encourage posts that are interesting and high quality... it is not easy to read a lot of blogs and it takes a lot of my time!

Yeah, the video was very funny.
I've never gotten one of those really popular post thingies, but it'd be nice to get it.
For me I think my problem with causing offence is mroe than likely going to be my christian blog. As for taking offence I try not to. It's usually not worth it.
Thanks for comign by.

What you do is appreciated and I think we need more of it.
The fact that anyone reads these and says hey man good job I think is a great thing to do.
See you back soon I hope.
