Drizzt Do'Urden
June 11th 2007 12:25
If you are a D& D nerd, this character needs little to no introduction. The unique creation of R.A Salvatore, Drizzt is brilliant example of the good man in a bad world. For those that don't know, he is a drow, or dark elf. They are a race that are chaotic, selfish, diabolic and close to pure evil. They live in the Underdark, a place of great danger, darkness and little beauty. Drizzt, being a passionate, independent and almost altruistic individual, finds the confines of his city, his home, his world and his family far too draining.
I won't spoil the plot for you, but suffice to say, it is simple but good.
Speaking of the actual character, he is stereotypical, but in a good way. Comparable to Aragorn, in that they are both rangers, independent, great fighters, but most well known for their loyalty to their friends and their lack of compromise when it comes to their values. He fights with two scimitars, a deft and blindingly fast whirlwind of steel and skill. His dialogue is basic, but basic doesn't mean it is without flair. His journal entries show the work of a great mind and a great talent.
What is also curious to note is that in just about every D& D video game that is in the same world, it is almost impossible to not bump into him. Baldur's Gate (on PC, and PS2), DemonShard and Menzoberanzan. Granted, the last one isn't much of a surprise.
To be honest, my favourite series written with this particular character would be first the Dark Elf Trilogy and then the Hunters Blades Trilogy. Grab them, they're well worth the read.

I wonder if the D & D creators write with sociological commentary embedded in?

I've played a few of the pen and papers myself. DnD, TMNT, RIFTS.....
Generally we didn't play them strictly to book, we played the strictly to fun. We came up with rules, items, classes, etc.
Good times, good times.
Some of the computer games are very good as well.
See you around soon again I hope,

You'd both know alot, want to know more and enjoy spending time in mutual appreciation.

I get the feeling that our lives are operating on some mysterious parallel.
We play the same games, read the same books....Are you sure you're not me?
