Do you trust journalists?

September 22nd 2008 04:16
Do people generally trust journalists? Why or why not?
The Readers Digest list of our 100 most trusted professions listed journalism just above telemarketers, prostitutes, car salesmen, real estate salespeople and pollies (see list below). What worries me is that journalists are BELOW psychics. If this is taken as a they-are-telling-the-truth-th erefore-i-trust-them o'meter, what the hell is going on?

I trust journalists more than I trust a Reader's Digest list.

The Truth is Out There, apparently. But Chris says maybe not in Reader's...

Maybe journalists aren't trusted as much as psychics in relation to the truth because people know journalists are lying, whereas psyhcics tell people the type of bullshit they want to believe?

So it's a suspension of disbelief that is the problem. People know they should trust journalists but can't; and know they shouldn't trust psychics but can't help themselves????

Soooo true... ;}
and telemarketers - must have run out of jobs completely to ask about...
I don't understand, though, why Digest says it's 100 most trusted and finished at 40 with telemarketers. What's left - firing squad captain? Customs Cavity Searcher? Tax auditor? US President?

Amanda,

A very entertaining post.

I remember my journalism professor (well media law prof.) pointing this fact out at University, during one tutorial, so I guess that verifies it to a point, although I note there is no placing for the validity of what level university professors can be trusted?

Perhaps the problem lies in the truth itself and the endless need of journalists to make it a static thing ... one size fits all, or there;s no money in the paycheck.

Having said that, I dont practice journalism commercially anymore in the mainstream media, because of this reason. I wish I realised that I wasnt going to be good at totting the party line, before I paid out all that money.

One last thought on this is lengthy, sorry .. But, it is taught that journalism (mainly the freedom of speech) is what keeps governments transparent and the only reason democracy can survive. I am not defending that or disputing it, but I also note with some interest that politicians are lower on the list than the journalists keeping them in order.

This intrigues me because I am left to ponder why we need either at all, since both are obviously lying?

going of to postulate ...

Lilla ...

In the main I trust journalists - just not publishers and television producers - who contort the message for generally the evil dollar, political ends or ratings/circulation.

Stay well

Ok, so time for confessions. I am a journalist. What I write generally gets published as is. I am not in it for the money (hahahahahahaaaaaaa) nor for the fame (HAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAH), but because I want to make a positive contribution to public debate. Like a public service, I guess. My question is - am I wasting my time? Do I need a new career?
