Bond, James Bond.

Well, I went and saw the film last week but now I feel ready to post about it.
There are a few schools of thought as to who was the best Bond. Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton and Roger Moore are people’s usual picks and for a variety of reasons. Moore because he was classy, Dalton because he was a maniac and Connery because well, he was Connery. I am part of the school that believes Connery was the best. The logic behind this is simple. Where Moore brought a lot of class and Dalton a lot of sheer lethality, only Connery was a brilliant fusion of these two. Until now. I have to admit, I was not a fan of the blonde Bond. I was against it from the start. And then I went and actually SAW the film.
I have to admit, the new Bond isn’t as suave or sophisticated as Moore could be at his best. Mainly I think, not due to the actor, but to the script. He was supposed to be just starting out. That being said though, he showed parts that were the beginnings of suave but he also had that wonderful dangerous edge that has been missing from Bond for far too long.
The way that I see it, Bond was not just someone that got by on his looks and good one liners. While these might impress the female foreign agents (usually the Russian ones) it is more than likely not going to stop bullets or beatings. In this incarnation, I think I could confidently say that if this Bond were handed a tire iron and told to beat someone to death for king and country, he’d do it. He did have some great one-liners but he did the thing that Pierce just couldn’t do. He brought back that bully-boy violence and danger to the character. And what truly amazed me and impressed me is the lack of explosions, cool toys, or other cheap tricks to raise hype. The movie relied on the good old fashioned basics. Good cinematography, good acting, good dialogue and good characters.
Looking forward to the next Bond movie now…..

I have read many of the Fleming books but have never associated the literary character with the film character...they are separate beings.
Although I liked 'Casino Royale'...I'm still in 2 minds about Daniel Craig as Bond.
Yes he is vicious and cold and disarming and charming (and from a woman's point of view...not too hard on the 'aye' either!) but...for me...unfortunately every Bond actor will be a comparison not a successor to Connery.
However...2 things that made me change my mind about Blond, James Blond....or Bland, James Bland...
1) when he tells M that "the job is done and the bitch is dead"; this may seem odd for a woman like me to find this appealing but... to me, it conveyed the exact moment of Bond's literal change of heart. He was betrayed by and lost someone he 'gave his heart to'...to save himself the pain, he hard hearted himself...
The way Craig said this, well you could see the swallowing, the locking and the throwing away of the key.
2)when he says "The name is Bond. James Bond".
I believed him.
Hope you are well JZ...

With you, completely. Connery was the best of them, because he was those elements.
I loved the James Bond line at the end, it was brilliant. But he also showed that wonderful defiance of Bond as well, "You died scratching my nuts" was pretty funny and very Bond.
I wonder when the new one will be out.
